SOME TRUISMS: A graphic novel inevitably relies on pictures. The point is to make the pictures work together to tell a story.
Of course, the definition of a good graphic novel depends on the reader - whether the story is substantial, or whether it is
aesthetically appealing, among other factors.
No tale can be told at its best if it is not appropriately executed, and it requires experience to do so.
Realizing this, I decided to start 'Secret' as my practice piece. I was hoping to improve on techniques that
help to convey a story: pacing, aesthetic detail, portraying emotions, patience for continuing with it.
To give myself freedom while drawing, I devised a plot that would be near impossible to confuse.
Thankfully this story's simplicity is part of its charm. 'Secret' is simple. Essentially it is about two friends,
their feelings and a haircut. It is uncomplicated. However, it is also expandable. The plot is meant to grasp a
"living in the moment" experience with an ending that allows readers to imagine a deeper conclusion for themselves.
The juxtaposition of a pivotal event with a light-hearted frame gives 'Secret' as much frivolity as it does substance.
Overall, 'Secret' was drawn for my benefit and posted for people's entertainment - to fill someone's desire for something
to do and nothing to think about. It does not need to be commended or criticized beyond that context.
It's whatever you want it to be, really.
